Thanks to Nathan, I've discovered podcasts. More specificially, "This American Life." It's been a savior at work this week, as I've been charged with the task of categorizing brand pages, which essentially means... meh, it's really boring and mindless, that's all you really need to know. Anyway, now, instead of squirming in my seat and figuring out ways to prop my eyelids open when 2pm comes around, I don't even want to take a lunch break 'cause I'm so wrapped up in the podcast! I'm like a child, all you have to do to keep me focused is read me a story.
The best part about "This American Life" is the variety... and Ira Glass. I wish I had his interviewing skillz. It's really really hard for me to stay happy and motivated sitting for 8 hours enclosed in a gray cubicle lit by fluorescent bulbs, and that program has completely reinvented my shift. In just one episode, I find myself stifling giggles, sitting on the edge of my seat, and even tearing up! Man, now that I think of it, 8 hours of emotional ups and downs might really start wearing on me... Also, I've been struggling to write recently, which is why there's been a decrease in posting. Not that this post is anything special, but I had other projects that I've been neglecting as well. The stories on "This American Life" are exactly what I want to be writing about, stories about people. Not only am I interested in people, but I'm super interested in the fact these are SHORT stories! As I am slowly developing ADD, and I don't have patience for the kind of outline a novel would take, short stories are absolutely perfect for me.
Anyway, I'm a little tired right now so I'm having a hard time expressing just how much I love this show. Nate gave me a whole list of shows to listen to, though it's going to take me quite some time to get through the American Life archives. If you have suggestions on any other podcasts you think I might like, that stream for free over the internet, let me know!
Oh, here are links to a few of my favorite episodes so far, in case you want to listen (click "stream episode" once you get there):
